DESCRIPTION:Come enjoy our reception on Friday\, August 2 with Featured Artists\, Cindy Conder and Lori Garcy. The event goes from 6 till 8 pm and includes hors d’ouevres\, wine and beer. \n“Ebb and Flow 2019”\n \n“Life and nature ebbs and flows and as we create art\, it also ebbs and flows over time. As time goes on\, we come back to the art we used to do and then we create new things that help us move forward.  The show will explore the movement of our creativity from past to future\, the ebb and flow of our work.” \n“There is a constant conflict within my mind.\nThe engineer in me wants everything under control\, clean and neat.\nThe artist in me wants more movement and flow.\nThis past year I have been working toward that flow.\nI’ve been working on wave forms\, mixing colors\, and allowing more organic shapes\, and trying to get the glass to move\, or give the impression of movement\, so many of my newer pieces have a more organic look and feel. I’m hoping the viewer will be drawn into the piece\, and notice the movement within.”\n— Cindy Conder \n“Tree” by Cindy Conder – Fused Glass \n  \nFor many years\, Lori has collected stones and rocks from wherever she has traveled.  She has collected sapphires from Montana\, Herkimer diamonds from New York\, rubies from India\, petrified food from Michigan\, amber from Russia\, Jade from China\, sunstone from Oregon and stones from many more places.  Her collection has grown but stayed hidden until now. \nFor the August “Ebb and Flow” show\, Lori decided to return to some of the traditional metalsmithing she did in the past and use some of the stones she has collected to create her new work.   Much thought has gone into the creation of each piece and she hopes people will enjoy her “stones” as much as she has. \nNecklace by Lori Garcy

DESCRIPTION:Featured for August are glass artist\, Cindy Conder\,  and sculptor and jewelry artist\, Lori Garcy. Come see their individual work and the beautiful new collaborative pieces that they have created together at the August First Friday Reception\, August 3 from 6:00 – 8:00pm. \nBorn in Fire \nBeing an artist is mostly a solitary venture.  Artist work alone in their studios thinking about\, designing and making their art.  Rarely do they get the opportunity to collaborate with other artists. \nCindy and Lori decided to take on the challenge of creating art together that combined Cindy’s glass pieces with Lori’s metal work.  Out of this collaboration some very beautiful pieces were designed and created. \nBoth mediums have limitations that required both artists to be flexible.  Lori asked Cindy to make pieces in a certain form and then created the metal sections.  Both artists went back and forth making suggestions on how it could be better.  Not all the suggestions would work because of the uniqueness of the glass and metal. \nTheir first collection of pieces will be shown at Gallery Calapooia during the month of August.  They hope to continue their collaboration in the future. \nGlass Art by Cindy Conder \n  \n\nCopper/Mixed Media Art by Lori Garcy \nGlass and Copper Collaboration by Cindy Conder and Lori Garcy \nGlass and Copper Collaboration by Cindy Conder and Lori Garcy

DESCRIPTION:Gallery Calapooia artists will show their work at the Main branch of the Albany Public Library from January 2\, 2018 through February 27\, 2018. A variety of work will be on display\, including watercolor paintings\, calligraphy\, monoprints and linocuts\, vinyl images\, glass wall hangings and more. \nThe Library is located at 2450 14 th Ave SE\, in Albany\, near the Heritage Mall. Gallery Calapooia artists’ work will be displayed throughout the 2 nd floor. The main branch of the Albany Library is open from 10 am to 8 pm\, Monday through Wednesday\, from 10 am to 6 pm\, Thursday and Friday\, and from 1 pm to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday. \nWe hope you have the chance to see the work at the Library. The Library is an excellent venue for large works that are displayed less frequently at the Gallery due to space constraints\, so you may see some work in the Library show you have not seen before. \nThe Library is always looking for community artists to show in their space. SUMMARY:Mark your Calendars for Some Holiday Events at Gallery Calapooia!
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Calapooia loves the Holiday Season! We love it so much that we are starting early this year! The first event we are participating in is the Downtown Association’s “Downtown Unwrapped” on Thursday\, November 2. This is downtown Albany’s kick off for the Holidays. We will unveil our holiday window and have warm drinks and cookies. The event starts at 5:00 and goes until 7:00\, and it’s a great way to get a head start on your Holiday shopping. \nWe are participating in “Shop Small Saturday” on November 25. Starting at 10:00 and going to 5:00\, this is a chance to support your local businesses by making it a point to stay away from the chaos of the big box stores and visit Downtown Albany\, with its lovely twinkling lights in the trees and no lines! Our other big Downtown Albany event is the “Twice Around Town Parade” on Sunday\, Dec. 2 at 5:00. The parade route starts at the corner of Broadalbin Street and First Avenue\, heads west down First to Calapooia Street\, heads south on Calapooia to Second Avenue\, heads east on Second to Broadalbin\, heads north on Broadalbin to First\, and then around again\, ending up at Two Rivers Market parking lot at the corner of Second and Ferry. Immediately following the parade is the Community Tree Lighting Ceremony at Two Rivers Market parking lot\, corner Ferry and Second. \nTo help our customers who like to have brunch downtown on Sundays\, Gallery Calapooia will be open from 9:00-1:00 from Sunday\, November 5 through Sunday\, Dec. 17. If it is too difficult to make it downtown during the week\, here is your chance for some extra time. \nStarting on November 5th and continuing through December 17\, Gallery Calapooia will be open on Sundays from 9am until 1pm to accommodate holiday shoppers. We also have extended evening hours on Thursday\, Nov. 2 as part of Downtown Unwrapped which runs 5-8 p.m.

SUMMARY:First Friday Reception - October 6
DESCRIPTION:For August\, Gallery Calapooia’s featured artists are Pat Spark and Linda J. Herd. \nPat has been making felt for over 30 years and has been a watercolorist for about the same amount of time\, but it’s only in the last few years that she has been combining the two.  That is\, taking concepts from her painting\, and applying those concepts to her feltmaking. The result is the watercolor series.  Felts that are conceptually similar to watercolors\, but which are totally made of dyed fiber.  There is no actual painting involved\, unless you consider the placement of each individual colored fiber as “painting” with the fiber.  With these works\, she creates rich backgrounds and uses those backgrounds to help define the foregrounds.  By themselves\, the foregrounds would be flat\, but by making the backgrounds visually exciting\, the foregrounds are enriched. \nLinda States: “Inspiration for my designs comes from materials\, environments\, and lifestyles. The influences of the urban sophistication of New York and the natural beauty of Oregon combine to give my work a distinctive look. My studies in architecture and urban design have taught me the impact detail has on style. It is my firm belief that jewelry should make a statement\, not a suggestion; my designs reflect that principle in their boldness of scale\, texture\, and color. \nDesign has its challenges\, including learning new skills and incorporating new materials. The ever escalating cost of silver has prompted me to start using copper and other metals. I am inspired by the work artists\, architects\, and designers such as Alexander Calder. Charles Rennie Macintosh\,. and William Morris. Learning new techniques and skills brings a fresh perspective to my work. SUMMARY:First Friday Reception\, "Two Artists\, Many Layers" - Marilyn Lindsley and Bill Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Jeweler Marilyn Lindsley of Corvallis and vinyl artist Bill Thompson of Albany will be the featured artists during June at Gallery Calapooia\, 222 First Ave. W. in downtown Albany. Their show\, “Two Artists\, Many Layers” will highlight the ways that they both work with layers to create their art. \nLindsley will show a new line of her jewelry\, which is a departure from the polymer clay\ndesigns she has created for more than 20 years. She creates surface designs using layers of\nclay with various textures and pigments but now adds aluminum bezels to the clay pieces.\nThe bezels are machined using computer-aided design software. The new work represents\nlayers of technology supporting layers of polymer clay art. \n\nThompson uses layers of thin sheet vinyl to create fine art images. He discovered the\nprocess while attempting to cut a stencil for a multi-color screen print. Because accurate\nalignment of each layer is critical\, each picture is limited to 4 or 5 colors. \nAn artists’ reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday\, June 2\, will feature the work of Lindsley and\nThompson\, as well as 18 other mid-valley artists. Wine\, beer and snacks will be served.\nGallery Calapooia is in its fourth year of operation. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.\nTuesday through Saturday. The gallery is a nonprofit organization and donations to it are tax deductible.
